Bertrand, Aloysius

Bertrand, Aloysius
(1807-1841)
   writer
Born in Ceva, Italy, Aloysius Bertrand was an ardent follower of victor hugo. He came to Paris to pursue a career in writing but initially had little success. Then, his "poems in prose" (Gaspard de la nuit, Fantaisies à la manière de Rembrandt et de Callot, posthumous, 1842) were praised by charles baudelaire in the introduction to his Spleen de Paris. These same writings of Bertrand would also inspire three piano pieces by maurice ravel. Considered evocative of former times and "strangely picturesque," his poems in prose show a romantic taste for an imaginative and picturesque vision of the Middle Ages. In fact, his studies of strange imagery and the secret resonance of certain of his writings make Bertrand a precursor of surrealism.
